RFID tags

RFID technology

An RFID system comprises a tag, an interrogator (the reader) and a host system. The host computer manages the information flow, sending to and receiving from the reader and tag. The data flow between the reader and tag occurs over an air interface, or radio frequency (RF) link.

Autepra supplies tags and inlays based on passive RFID technology. This means that they don’t require an internal power supply or battery. The power required to energize the tag is drawn from the magnetic field created by the reader unit’s antenna. The tag’s ability to draw energy efficiently from the reader’s RF field is based on the well-known electrical resonance effect.

You can find more information about RFID on the EPCglobal Inc. and AIM Global websites.

2. Integrated Circuit (IC).

RFID tags can have 3 inlays:

  • Dry inlay: continuous web, no adhesive
  • Wet inlay: die-cut web with adhesive, filmic face
  • Tag: die-cut web with adhesive, paper face

UHF (ultra high frequency) products

The frequency used for ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID systems varies between 860 and 960 MHz. UHF RFID systems operate at 915 MHz in the United States and 868 MHz in Europe. UHF RFID systems are being widely deployed due to RFID mandates from several large corporations, including international retailers, and the U.S. Department of Defense. In addition to retail, UHF systems are employed in various supply chain management applications.

UHF frequency ranges:

Global: 860 - 960 MHz;

FCC: 902 - 928 MHz;

ETSI: 868 MHz;

Japan: 950 MHz.

HF (high frequency ) products

The frequency typically used for high frequency (HF) RFID systems is 13.56 MHz. The HF frequency range is accepted worldwide. A typical HF RFID system uses passive tags and offers fair performance in the presence of metals and liquids. HF systems are widely used in library, mass transit and product authentication applications.

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range radio frequency communication technology that enables data exchange between devices a few centimetres apart. The technology follows the ISO 14443 proximity standard and combines the interface of an RFID card/ticket plus a reader in a single device. An NFC device is able to communicate with existing ISO 14443 RFID cards/tickets and readers and other NFC devices, so it is compatible with existing contactless infrastructure. UPM Raflatac offers a wide variety of ISO 14443 compliant products.
